CASA GROTTA
DEL VICINATO

The Casa Grotta del Vicinato is an example of how the Matera people lived until the displacement of the 60s. The first environment is the built environment, recognizable by the masonry blocks. In this space there is a wood stove. Immediately we pass into the negative part. To the right we see the wine shed, for oil, depending on the area, the kneading trough to keep the flour and to knead. In the center, the table with only two chairs and the sewn plate. The earthenware dishes, the jars, the skins ... were repaired by the Conza Piatti which applied some metal points which it then covered.

At the bottom on the left the stable for the mule's shelter; in front of it the bed that in this way was able to take as much heat as possible from the animals. The bed lined with corn leaves, tall to defend against rising damp. We can see the cantaro the terracotta vase where the Matera people carried out their needs. It was then the task of women to go to the grabiglioni to empty their contents.

With the burial of the grabiglioni, a barrel cart warned the population early in the morning to empty the organic waste. In the center, the brazier for heating the environment and the grain container for foodstuffs. In the area to the right the environment was originally a cistern that will be eliminated during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to recover space and environment. In the Casa Grotta del Vicinato they lived until 1958.
